Chillums

Chillums
Chillums.

Chillums have been popular in the West since the Hippy era of the 60's, when they were brought back from India. Though the exact origin remains unclear as chillums have been found as far away as South America. In Indian they have been used for centuries, if not thousands of years, by the Indian Sadhu in ritual and spiritual practices to smoke charas.

Traditinally made from a conical clay pipe or cow's horn, they can also be made of glass, stone and wood. More recent master chillum makers such as Alverman, Kaio and Danielle have been producing some eye-catching clay chillums with intricate decorations and designs, including gold bands along the pipe.
Chillum Mixtures

A typical chillum mixture consists of 1/3 tobacco and 2/3 hashish, which has been flaked together in a mixing bowl to produce a fine mix. Place the mixture into the pipe and press it down against the chillum stone. The Chillum stone prevents the mixture and hot hashish from falling through the chillum, some chillums have different stones so you can regulate the burning chamber to hold more or less.

You're now ready to light up your chillum, with the help of a friend, take a few big tokes to get it started, followed by a good deep lungful inhale, then pass it on; traditionally this is to the person on your right.

Caring for your Chillum

A good chillum, if properly looked after, should last a life time, it should be cleaned after each smoking session to prevent nasty smells and taste occuring. Use a Saffi or damp cloth wrapped around a chillum stick, running the chillum up and down until completely smooth.
